ABSTRACT

To explore the effects of crude toxins from Colletotrichum gloeosporioides(C. gloeosporioides)on the growth of Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo(D. officinale),and to provide early basis for thescreening and cultivation of the resistant variants of C. gloeosporioides. Methods Seedlings of D. officinal werecultivated in MS medium added with different concentrations of the crude toxins from C. gloeosporioides. Theeffects of the crude toxin on the growth of seedlings were observed, and the optimum resistance -selectionthreshold was preliminarily screened. Results In the concentration range of 5% - 15%(volume fraction),crudetoxins from C. gloeosporioides increased the plant height, stem diameter, number of new bud, root number, and fresh mass of D. officinale, among which the effect of 5%(volume fraction)of crude toxins was the moststrongest. In the concentration range of 35% - 40%(volume fraction),crude toxins suppressed the plant height, leaf number, number of new bud, root number, and the fresh mass of D. officinale. When cultured with 20%(volume fraction)crude toxins, D. officinale was blooming, and the flowers appeared variation phenomenon. Conclusion The crude toxins from C. gloeosporioides have biological activity and certain toxicity, which can beconsidered as a selection agent instead of pathogenin in vitro to screen the resistant variant of D. officinale, butthe optimum resistance-selection threshold still needs further research.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of different bolus and swallow patterns on esophageal manometry in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease by high resolution manometry .Methods Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire score of more than 8 points and positive 24-hour pH monitoring were included in the study .All the patients were detected by liquid swallow ,solid swallow and continuous swallow .The parameters and comprehensive diagnosis were in accordance with the Chicago Standard .Results A total of 42 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease were enrolled . Compared with the dynamic parameters of liquid swallow ,the residual pressure of upper esophageal sphincter [(11 .07 ± 3 .97 ,5 .29 ± 3 .36)mmHg] decreased ,the distal latency [(6 .28 ± 1 .87 ,8 .98 ± 2 .25)s] ,and lower esophageal sphincter relaxation time [(7 .79 ± 0 .98 ,10 .69 ± 13 .04)s] prolonged significantly (all P<0 .05) .In the comprehensive diagnosis of esophageal motility ,compared with liquid swallow (38 .1% ) , continuous liquid swallow showed a more sensitive positive diagnostic rate of ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) (63 .2% ) ,with a significant difference (P=0 .008) .Compared with that of liquid swallow ,the diagnostic rate (45 .2% ) of IEM by the solid swallow did not differ significantly (P=0 .581) . Among the ineffective contraction ,the rate of failed contraction (44.3% ) of solid swallow was higher than that of liquid swallow (22 .6% ) .Conclusion Solid swallow is more likely to induce severe esophageal hypomotility disorders than liquid swallow.Continuous swallow has more sensitivity in the diagnosis of IEM.Therefore.it can be used as a supplement to routine manometry in patients with eastroesophageal reflux disease.

ABSTRACT

Intestinal microbiota as an important "microbial organ" in the human body may play a key role in the human development, intestinal barrier, immune regulation, digestion and nutrient absorption, detoxification, angiogenesis, as well as the occurrence and development of diseases. As a vertebrate biotype, zebrafish is widely used in the fields of de-velopmental biology, immunology, genetics, toxicology and the establishment of human disease models, because of their common development and phylogenetic system with humans. A number of unique features, including its transparent embry?os, rapid development, easy to take intestinal samples, and other advantages, made its wide popularity as an ideal model for the study of intestinal microbes. However, the research on zebrafish intestinal microbiology is still at an elementary stage. This paper summarizes the recent progress in research of zebrafish intestinal microbiota, including the related func?tion of intestinal microbes in zebrafish, the assembly and succession of intestinal microbial community and factors influen?cing the intestinal microbial structure, and provides a theoretical basis for studying the effects of intestinal microbes on hu?man health and its application in the treatment of diseases.

ABSTRACT

The use of exogenous carbon monoxide releasing molecules (CORMs) provides promise for clinical application; however, the hazard potential of CORMs in vivo remains poorly understood. The developmental toxicity of CORM-3 was investigated by exposure to concentrations ranging from 6.25 to 400 μmol/L during 4-144 h post fertilization. Toxicity endpoints of mortality, spontaneous movement, heart rate, hatching rate, malformation, body length, and larval behavior were measured. CORM-3 disrupted the progression of zebrafish larval development at concentrations exceeding 50 μmol/L, resulting in embryonic developmental toxicity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) on coagulation function, deep venous hemodynamics and prevention of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of lower limbs in patients after rectal cancer resection.

METHODSA total of 120 patients undergoing rectal cancer resection were randomly divided into non-IPC group (control group, n=60) and IPC group (n=60). The control group received routine treatment after resection and the IPC group received IPC based on the routine treatments. Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FIB), international normalized ratio (INR) and volume of D-dimer (D-D) were detected before operation and 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-day after operation. Meanwhile, blood flow velocity and caliber of external iliac vein, femoral vein and popliteal vein were examined by color Doppler ultrasound, then the average blood flow velocity and blood flow volume were calculated.

RESULTSIncidence of lower limb DVT was 13.3% (8/60) and 1.7% (1/60) in control group and IPC group respectively with significant difference (P<0.05). The differences in PT, APTT and INR were not significant (P>0.05) at 1-day after operation as compared to the preoperative level, while FIB and D-D both increased (P<0.05), all presented no significant difference among the two groups (P>0.05). PT shortened gradually (P<0.05), APTT and INR did not change significantly (P>0.05), FIB and D-D increased gradually (P<0.05), and no significant differences were found between the two groups at the same time point (all P>0.05). All the above parameters in the control group were significantly lower than those in IPC group (all P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONSIPC can improve hemodynamics indexes of deep veins of lower limb in patients after rectal cancer operation, and prevent the lower limb DVT. IPC is a safe, simple and convenient physical therapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of liver transplantation for patients with cholangiocarcinoma.

METHODSAccording to the requirements of Cochrane systematic review, a thorough literature search was performed in Pubmed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane Central Register electronic databases ranged between 1995 and 2009 in terms of the key words "liver transplantation", and "cholangiocarcinoma" or "cholangiocellular carcinoma" or "bile duct cancer". And restricted the articles published in the English language. Two reviewers independently screened the studies for eligibility, evaluated the quality and extracted the data from the eligible studies with confirmation by cross-checking. Data were processed for a meta-analysis by Stata 10 software with 1-, 3-, 5-year survival rates and incidence of complications.

RESULTSA total of 14 clinical trials containing 605 patients were finally enrolled in this study. The overall 1-, 3-, 5-year pooled survival rates were 73% (95%CI: 0.65 - 0.80), 42% (95%CI: 0.33 - 0.51) and 39% (95%CI: 0.28 - 0.51), respectively. Of note, preoperative adjuvant therapies (OLT-PAT group) rendered the transplanted individuals comparably favorable outcomes with 1-, 3-, 5-year pooled survival rates of 83% (95%CI: 0.57 - 0.98), 57% (95%CI: 0.18 - 0.92) and 65% (95%CI: 0.40 - 0.87), respectively. In addition, the overall pooled incidence of complications was 62% (95%CI: 0.44 - 0.78), among which that of OLT-PAT group (58%, 95%CI: 0.20 - 0.92) was relatively acceptable compared to those of liver transplantation alone (61%, 95%CI: 0.33 - 0.85) and liver transplantation with extended bile duct resection (78%, 95%CI: 0.55 - 0.94).

CONCLUSIONSIn comparison to curative resection of cholangiocarcinoma with the 5-year survival rate reported from 20% to 40%, the role of liver transplantation alone is so limited, but neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy combined with liver transplantation can bring better short- and long-term prognosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo compare profiles and related factors of irregular bleeding induced by different types of low-dose hormone therapy (HT) and a Chinese formulated herbs products.

METHODSApplied with open-labeled, randomized, and clinical trial design, 136 postmenopausal women were assigned into four groups: group A: estradiol valerate (E2 V) 1 mg/d + medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 2 mg/d; group B: conjugated equine estrogen 0.45 mg/d + MPA 2 mg/d; group C: tibolone 1.25 mg/d; group D: a Chinese formulated herbs product (Kuntai) 4# tid. Each subject took element calcium 400 mg/d and vitamin D 200 IU/d concomitantly. Modified Kupperman scores were assessed on baseline and every 3 months thereafter and irregular bleeding was recorded on menopausal diary every day. The duration of this study was 1 year. Results The efficacies were similar in three HT-managed groups, but was better than in group D, although the latter was also effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms. Hazard ratio (HR) of irregular bleeding was 1.00 in group C, 2.43 in group A (95% CI: 1.08-5.46), 3.12 in group B (95% CI: 1.42-6.88), and 0.73 in group D (95% CI: 0.26-2.04). Most cases initially experienced bleeding in the first 3 months but such initiation was a bit later in group C. Endometrium, as detected by B-mode ultrasound, increased approximately 1 mm in HT groups, while it was a bit thicker in group C. Long periods in reproductive age and short time since menopause were high risk factors for irregular bleeding.

CONCLUSIONProfiles of irregular bleeding in 3 commonly used types of low-dose HT are different and some factors such as long period in reproductive age and short time since menopause may contribute to bleeding initiation.
